Off-Season: Femke Kok

Off-Season: Femke Kok

Starting out our Off-Season series is 21-year-old Dutch speed skater, Femke Kok. We asked Femke a few questions in order to understand her mentality during the off-season and what she likes to do outside of training.

"I always want to improve things and I always want to get better."

Q: What is your motivation in the off-season?

A: My biggest motivation in the off season is to become better than the last race season! I really want to improve everything I’m doing to become faster on the ice in the race season.

Q: Is your mentality different during the off-season compared to the racing season?

A: It’s maybe a little different but not that much. I always want to improve things and I always want to get better. But in the racing season I think i’m a little more strict and more focused in my mentality than during the off season. In the off season I don’t have to do a big competition or race , so I’m a bit more relaxed when I have to make a decision for example. But during the racing season I think about every thing twice, because I really don’t want to make a decision that’s not right for me. During the race season I also want to be sure that everything is well arranged and everything is well planned. But during off season I don’t care about that stuff so much.

Q: What is your favorite thing to do outside of training?

A: In my spare time I really enjoy doing fun things with my friends! Other things I like to do is, shopping, baking and I like to go to our boat to make beautiful boat trips on the lakes. 🛥

Q: What do you look forward to most about this upcoming racing season?

A: First of all, I really hope I make a lot of progress and get faster! And if I do, I’m really looking forward to the World Championship single distances at my “home ice rink” in Thialf, Heerenveen! But first I need to qualify and that’s difficult in the Netherlands haha. But if I qualify I would be so excited, because I love to race in front of the Dutch audience!
